DARE WE SURRENDER AMERICA'S FUTURE TO THE UNITED NATIONS?
By Tom DeWeese

We Americans are being confronted by the stark reality of what it means for our nation to be a member of the United Nations. As the international organization stalls, back ped- dles, and draws yet another line in the sand, we Americans are beginning to more clearly see that the United Nations is an entity which threatens our national security.

A United Nations founding member, the United States of America is its largest source of funding in terms of dues and contributions to UN programs, yet finds itself engaged in a surreal debate as it seeks approval to do what the UN has demonstrated it lacks the courage to accomplish, the disarming of Iraq.

Without UN help, the U.S.A. has created its own "coalition of the willing." This mission is supported by Great Britain, Spain, and many Eastern bloc nations formerly under the heel of the Soviet Union. In addition, the mission has the low profile support of Middle Eastern nations who live in the shadow of Iraq's threat.

Meanwhile, despite seventeen empty UN Security Council resolutions, despite President Bush's warning that the UN is on the brink of "irrelevance," despite Secretary of State Colin Powell's remarkable presentation of the threat Iraq represents, the Security Coun- cil continues to dither and to mobilize international opposition to the mission to forcibly disarm Saddam Hussein's regime. In this, it is led by France, a permanent member of the Security Council.

The question facing Americans now is whether our nation's future is to be ceded to the most irresolute international body on earth, the United Nations? To do so would cede, as well, our national sovereignty, the right of every nation to act in its own defense, to act in accordance with its own laws.

To those who make reference to "international law", the fact is that international law has been flouted by rogue nations throughout history and, in particular, the history of the last century, during which such nations initiated two world wars and numerous smaller conflicts. International law is a myth that is cited only when there are brief periods of peace between hostilities.

The United States can no longer maintain the luxury of membership in this enemy of sov- ereignty and freedom. The delays the UN would impose on our action in Iraq and wher- ever else it is required to restore real peace to the world can no longer be tolerated.  The future of the United States of America cannot be surrendered to the United Nations.
