WHAT IF THE LIBERALS GET WHAT THEY WANT
By Paul Walfield

Assuming there is an ideological dividing line, with the Liberals on the Left and the Conservatives on the Right, what happens if the Left gets what it wishes?

Congressman Dennis Kucinich wants a Department of Peace, and he wants for all us to dance with unicorns under rainbows of living color. Then there is Howard Dean, who is trying to win the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination. He’s the guy who isn’t sure the Iraqi people are better off without Saddam Hussein and wants us all to get ready for his Presidency and America’s decline from a world leader to being just another member of the European Union. Under his administration, we’d all be looking to France for guidance.

Father's Day may seem an innocuous holiday, but see what the Left can do to Fa- ther’s Day, if they have power. In California, the Left pretty much runs the govern- ment. First off, California is in the hole by about 38 billion dollars. An amount that is greater than the deficit for all the other states in the Union combined (the reason Californians will soon be having a recall election for Governor Gray Davis). It is indicative of the spending habits of the Left.

Back to Father’s Day. California’s leaders passed a resolution listing almost every kind of father lest they be thought of as not all-inclusive. According to the Sacramen- to Bee, California celebrated the “wonderful diversity” of fathers. Saying they in- clude “single fathers, foster fathers, adoptive fathers, biological fathers, stepfathers, families headed by two fathers, grandfathers raising grandchildren, fathers in blend- ed households, and other non-traditional fathers.”

The folks in Sacramento, if you notice, left out “traditional” fathers. They did say “biological,” but, as reported by the Sacramento Bee, biological could include incest, rape, and other nasty ways of becoming a biological father. Actually, the measure just barely passed, with all but one Republican voting against it. One Democrat said, “I don't know of anybody in the general public who would be unhappy or upset by a resolution saying all fathers in all kinds of families should be recognized on Father's Day.” Apparently, that Assembly person does not know the Republicans in the Cal- ifornia State House and that the idea of naming all fathers except traditional ones to be celebrated on Father’s Day is disconcerting to many in mainstream America.

Then there is the Left’s idea of whether America needs to be defended in the 21st century. Bill Clinton is not necessarily thought of as a Leftwing radical. But, he is a pretty good example of what happens when even a “moderate” Liberal has power, when it comes to American sovereignty and security and national defense.

While in office, Bill Clinton used to like to travel a lot. It was reported by ABC News that, in March, 2000, Bill and his daughter Chelsea and his mother-in law took a trip to Bangladesh, India, Switzerland, and a couple of other places. Along with the for- mer President went large Air Force transport planes, which comprised “more than one-third of the Air Force's entire inventory of these planes that are ready to fly on any given day.” Bill’s trip in March, 2000, cost the Pentagon 50 million dollars from the defense budget, an amount that would not be used on actual defense.

FreeCongress.Org reports that, as regards Bill’s trip, in 1998, to “Chile, China and Africa, the tab came to $72 million. Over sixty million came from the defense bud- get.” Under Bill Clinton’s Presidency, the U.S. Defense budget’s “real spending dollars during his years in office fell consistently below the budget level of approx- imately $270 billion (measured in real spending dollars) that he inherited in 1993.” FreeCongress.Org further reports: “Bill was a consistent opponent of missile de- fense,” and did little with regards to the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction in the world, including North Korea’s nuclear program or Iran’s quest for nuclear weapons. So much for the National Security legacy of a modern day Democratic President.

While the Democrats like to point to the economy under Bill Clinton, they leave out the fact that he initiated the largest tax increase in American history and the fact that the “booming” economy was largely based on the Republican Congress’s actions, not Bill Clinton’s fiscal policy. Bill Clinton and his Democratic administration basically kicked the can down the road, leaving his horrendous mismanagement of both do- mestic and foreign policy to be dealt with by subsequent administrations. That is what we are stuck with today.

However, Mr. Clinton, as President, did like to bring the U.S. military against all but America’s enemies, as in Haiti, Somalia and the former Yugoslavia. But, not when the USS Cole was attacked, and not when Americans were slaughtered in the Khobar Towers attack. Under a Democrat, America’s military is reserved for the protection of others. Attacks on America itself are deemed “criminal matters.”

As to why America is viewed as a target and understandably so by the Left is easily discerned by a look at our Leftist controlled education system. American history itself has been revised in order to remove America’s heroes from their pedestals.

Our Founding Fathers are tainted with the moniker of slave owners, as is Christopher Columbus. America itself is seen as a colonial power bent on world domination. Even President Lincoln is portrayed as being far more interested in saving the Union than in combating and eliminating slavery. Without heroes, or real role models, our children have no sense of nationality, no sense of Americanism. That is part of the Left’s plan for America and its people. The Left also needs revenue to implement its plan and to effect a spreading of the wealth.

Looking to the future, the Left wants to tax fast foods because they can say it is tar- geting a vice. They already tax cigarettes and alcohol. Based on the Left’s history, they really just like to tax people who have money in order to spend it on programs which enable people without money to claim they are victims in need of public as- sistance. And this allows the Left to tax even more.

Political correctness, undoubtedly, will become the law of the land. We already know that the Pledge of Allegiance will be out. The National Anthem will of course be eliminated, as it “glorifies war.” American colleges and universities, most of which are already bastions of Liberal ideology, will continue to turn out graduates whose education was so revised, diluted, and distorted that they believe America is the world’s obstacle to peace. American sovereignty, American power, and justice will all be subordinated to a world political authority--to a world government--through the United Nations. We are all the same and therefore there can be no more war. We are all told what, and more importantly, how to think.

Unfortunately, the Leftist vision does not account for evil in the world. Basically, the Leftist vision is unfortunate because, if evil does exist, the Leftists' notion of Utopia is impossible to achieve. With their belief in a Utopia that cannot be achieved and in a doctrine assuming the natural goodness and reasonableness of human beings--that flawed institutions and governmental policies are the phenomena which corrupt pre- viously innocent people, the Leftists are very much out of touch with the reality of human nature and the world we live in. They actually are that much out of touch with reality. Some observers of the political scene argue that the Leftists are psychoti- cally out of touch with reality.

More importantly, even if the Left’s vision were possible to achieve, how many Americans are willing to accept other people’s concept of what is politically correct and what is not? How many Americans want to be told “how” to think by people whose moral compass has no magnetic field?

How many Americans view themselves as part of a great experiment in world peace and are willing to risk their children’s future to find out if people they wouldn’t sit down with at the same dinner table are right about there being no evil in the world?
